Hair care in winter isn’t an easy task. With the winters right around the corner it is important for both men and women in India to take care of themselves, their skin and hair.
The dryness that is characteristic during the winter season in India is known to cause a large number of skin and hair problems.
In order to protect yourself against these impending concerns, it is advised that you take note of some of the following tips. Here are some essential tips to help the top of your head to survive the chill of the Indian winters:
- Cover your head with a scarf.
It is very important for everybody to cover their heads with a scarf or a cap during the winters. Make sure that you don’t put it on too tightly though. Doing so will cause more damage to your scalp since it hinders proper blood circulation.
Make it a point to only wear a scarf, hat or cap when you step outdoors. Continual and exess wearing of protective accessories on the top of your head can result in the overworking of the sebaceous glands, which then causes the strands to look limp and greasy.
Avoid wearing caps that are made of woolen fabrics since it is known to damage the hairline. Go for silk or cotton instead.
- Use only cool or lukewarm water on your head.
This is mistake a lot of us make. Using hot water directly from the geyser is not a good idea. It damages your strands and scalp.
Opt for lukewarm or cool water while washing your head during the winters. We recommend allowing the heated water to cool down to a bearable temperature before a bath.
- Don’t apply shampoo too often.
Shampooing too often during this season is a bad idea. Given the cold environment, the scalp tends to dry out more easily. Applying shampoo just makes it worse.
Use a dry shampoo that is specially helpful for this season. Given the wide variety of hair care brands available in the market today, finding such a product isn’t going to be a problem at all.
Don’t forget to apply a conditioner on your head as often as possible. For most people it is best to apply a little amount of conditioner with every bath to ensure that your scalp has enough moisture.
- Avoid using blow dryers as much as possible
Blow dryers tend to dry and damage the follicles to a great extent. It is therefore advised that you use a dryer as little as possible during the winters.
If you must, it is best to switch the dryer to the “cool” mode, which is found in most of the dryers available these days. This helps to prevent any unnecessary damage to your scalp. It might take a little longer to dry your hair, but it is definitely better for their health.
- Massage with oil frequently
Since your strands tend to loose moisture very easily in the winter, it is a great idea to apply hot oil whenever possible. Try natural oils like jojoba for protecting your growth against the chill and dryness of this season.
Massaging your strands and scalp at least twice a week ensures that your strands and follicles are adequately hydrated, and are able to retain the necessary moisture better.
- Use specialized products
Most of us tend to just go with whatever shampoo or conditioner we have at hand. Not only is this approach not helping our hair, but it is causing more damage than good.
Consult your dermatologist or a professional at a salon about products that target your specific type. They are best informed about which product it effective, and their advice should not be taken lightly.
Hair care during the winter season in India requires you to follow some basic tips to ensure that your locks don’t loose all their shine and health.
