There are a number of side effects of LASIK laser eye surgery for men and women undergoing the procedure in India. Some of these complications tend to be more common than others.
Before proceeding to discuss the adverse effects that may result from this surgery, patients should note that given the use of newer, more developed technology, the risks associated with LASIK now occur in less than 1% of patients.
Patients are now screened before being operated upon, thereby eliminating the chances of an unsuccessful operation.
Another noteworthy point is that most of the below mentioned risks are known to wear off, or resolve themselves, fairly quickly, which makes the prospect of the surgery seem better for many Indian men and women.
LASIK Side Effects
Among the most common adverse results of this treatment is associated with the cutting of the flab, previously conducted using a microkeratome, which can end up bruising the delicate tissue.
However, with the advent of new laser technology, the risk of such a hazard has been reduced significantly, if not eliminated altogether.
It has also been suggested that customized LASIK procedure may also result in untoward consequences, since most surgeons don’t use the necessary custom procedure to create the hinged eye flap. By replacing it over the reshaped cornea, there is a possibility that the patient does not experience ideal results.
Another common side effect associated with the LASIK operation is that of Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis, commonly abbreviated as DLK. This condition results when the dead cells lodge themselves beneath the corneal flap.
The cornea then makes the mistake of assuming them to be harmful by initiating an inflammatory response, which may then result in some scarring, and even permanent loss of eyesight if not treated properly in time.
Irregular astigmatism is another common unwanted consequence possible for a patient undergoing the traditional procedure of LASIK.
The tends to happen when the laser correction isn’t conducted as per instructions, or when the corneal surface isn’t smooth. Common symptoms of this problem include double vision, which can only be solved by taking advantage of additional surgery.
Double vision can also be caused by minor swelling post the surgery, and resolves itself within a few days time.
Keratectasia is another condition caused when the LASIK surgeon cuts the flap too deeply, or removes far too much tissue during the operation.
Once this mistake is committed, it results in the weakening and swelling of the cornea, which may lead to permanently distorted vision.
Many patients also experience the sensation that their eyes are dry, which can cause a lot of irritation and difficulty with vision.
This can also result in excessive inflammation and infection of the cornea. In most cases, the use of artificial tear drops is more than sufficient to solve this issue.
As is the case with any surgical procedure, some patients can develop an infection. With this operation the chances of this happening are really low. Some surgeons go as far as to prescribe prophylatic antibiotics to significantly reduce the risk of such an infection.
Problems with night vision is also common among LASIK patients in India. This generally results from the use of outdated procedures, or when the surgeon treats an relatively small area surrounding the pupil.
A common side effect among patients of any eye surgery is that of over or under correction. This can result in either blurry vision, or minor disturbances in eyesight.
When this happens, the patient needs to wear contact lenses or glasses to resolve the problem, or undergo another laser surgery.
Before opting for a LASIK laser eye surgery in India, one should also first examine and weigh the LASIK side effects before proceeding with the final operation and treatment.
